Backwell lies about 7 miles south west of Bristol. The church of St Andrew's dates from the 12
th century, with subsequent alterations. The elegant west tower depicted in the present watercolour, which rises over 100 feet above the surrounding countryside was built in the 15th century. On first glance the watercolour looks like a pastoral village landscape, with grazing cattle. However, on the left is a lime kiln and 'in the distance, below the ridge running to Clevedon, Nailsea is seen enveloped in the constant cloud of smoke from its glassworks.' (ibid.).
