David Cox (1783-1859)
Study of Cliffs, North Wales

Watercolour and black chalk on oatmeal paper
23.6 by 35.1 cm., 9 ¼ by 13 ½ in.

Provenance:
With the Manning Gallery, London
This sketch is likely to date from one of Cox's many visits to North Wales in the 1850s. It appears to depict the same cliffs as in `A Mountain Torrent', a large chalk and charcoal sketch by Cox in the Art Institute of Chicago (see Scott Wilcox,
Sun, Wind, and Rain - The Art of David Cox, exhibition catalogue, 2008, no. 107, p.223, ill.).
