This view of Edinburgh is taken from New Gaol - looking west towards North Bridge. North Bridge, which links the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, was originally built between 1763 and 1772 and was replaced in 1896. Underneath is Edinburgh's Waverley station which was called North Bridge station when it opened in 1846. To the left is the distinctive spire of St Giles's Cathedral with Edinburgh Castle beyond.
A smaller earlier version of this view dated 1821 was exhibited at the Barbican Centre in 1986-7 (see Helen Guiterman and Briony Llewellyn, David Roberts, 1986, p.100, no.27) and a view of the Castle looking east is in the National Gallery of Scotland.
