The Alcantara Bridge or Puente de Alcantara was originally a Roman bridge crossing the river Tagus built by the emperor Trajan between 104 and 106. Here it is seen from the south.
This watercolour, or the subsequent engraving, were likely used as the basis for the oil painting of this subject, dated 1841, which Queen Victoria bought as a birthday present for Prince Albert (Royal Collection). The engraving after it by Edward Goodall was published in 1855.
