In August 1844, Callow made his second visit to the Rhine and Moselle rivers. He recorded: `I proceeded by boat to Cochem, where I remained for several days sketching. The proprietor of the hotel spoke French and very obligingly walked out with me to point out the principal objects of interest, including Schloss Elz.' (see Jan Reynolds,
William Callow, 1980, pp.81-2). Callow exhibited two watercolours of this title at the Society of Painters in Water-colours in 1845 and 1848.
