John Henderson was a collector and archaeologist who bequeathed much of his collection to the British Museum, the National Gallery and Oxford University. His father also John Henderson was an amateur artist and early patron of Turner and Girtin. The rest of his collection was sold at Christie's on 16th February 1882 and included ten lots of works by Bonington. This drawing may be lot 32 which was described as `View in a French Town' and bought by Agnew's.
The foreground figures in the present work relate to a group of figure studies of fisherfolk drawn by Bonington as preparatory sketches for a group of marine pictures which he begun in spring 1824 (see Patrick Noon, Richard Parkes Bonington - the complete Drawings, 2011, nos. 75 to 158).
