This is a exceptional early examples of Rowbotham's work. His father Thomas Leeson Rowbotham (1782-1853) was a well-known Bristol artist who taught his son to draw at an early age. He made his first sketching tour, to Wales, in 1847 and he exhibited at the New Watercolour Society from 1848. He succeeded his father as drawing master at the Royal Naval School, Greenwich. His later works are mainly of Italian Lake views and lack originality.
