Stanton Harcourt is about six miles west of Oxford. Harcourt House was built for the Harcourt family in the 15th and 16th centuries and has one of the finest surviving medieval kitchens built in 1485. Both Turner and Girtin visited Stanton Harcourt in the 1790s - Girtin's watercolour of the exterior of the kitchen is in the Tate Gallery.
Delamotte was born in Weymouth where he gained the patronage of George III when a boy but he lived most of his life in Oxford as a drawing master and artist.
