Self-Portrait with two Watering Cans
Edward Lear (1812-1888)
Self-Portrait with two Watering Cans
Pen and brown ink
20 by 13.3 cm., 7 ¾ by 5 ¼ in.
Provenance:
David and Nancy Perth, 17th Earl and Countess of Perth
The partial letter reads: 'I wish Ralph were doing better than I fear he is. I don't expect to make any stay of length in England, but you may imagine I shall come & look up at Godalming. Yrs affectionately,'
The present fragmentary letter was possibly written from Italy and appears to be discussing a proposed trip to England. From the early 1870s, when the artist settled in San Remo and built Villa Emily, Lear paid shorter visits to England.
