Nicholl was born in Belfast and as a young man moved to London where he taught himself to paint by coping pictures. He left London for Dublin and first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1832. By 1840, he was back in London and exhibited intermittently at the Royal Academy from 1832 to 1854. He is known for his charmingly naïve views of Irish coastal towns often seen through a bank of flowers.

The present watercolour dates from the late 1840s. Nicholl travelled to Ceylon in 1846 to become drawing master at Colombo Academy
