The present watercolour depicts the porch of medieval Holy Cross Church at Shipton on Cherwell as it was before 1831, when it was demolished and rebuilt, to designs by William Turner and paid for by his uncle, also William. Some materials and features were re-used, including the porch seen in this watercolour, which as evidenced by the present work, was much admired by the artist. This watercolour, drawn when he was only 19, was one of his first exhibits at the Society of Painters in Water-colours.
